Brainspotting (BSP)
Brainspotting is a powerful therapeutic approach developed by David Grand, Ph.D. (2003) that utilizes eye positions to process emotions stored in the deeper, subcortical parts of our brain that often hold us back or keep us stuck. This approach goes outside typical “talk therapy” and instead focuses on body sensations and mindful observation of your experience. It can be used for many issues, ranging from trauma all the way to performance and creativity enhancement. Many clients describe this approach as something that has helped them “break through” areas in their lives where they previously felt stuck. I am a Certified Brainspotting Practitioner and Approved Brainspotting Consultant.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR is a treatment that uses eye movements (as well as sound and tapping) to facilitate processing of traumatic and distressing material that is stored in our brain, essentially “frozen” in time. First developed by Francine Shapiro, Ph.D. (1987) for trauma, it is now used for multiple conditions including depression, anxiety, somatic issues, sexual dysfunction, and more. EMDR can also be used for performance enhancement and can reduce performance anxiety, fear of failure, and procrastination. Many people report more progress in less time with EMDR than traditional “talk therapy” alone and describe feeling that past disturbing memories have less control over their thoughts, emotions, and behavior. I am an EMDR Certified Therapist by the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA).
Hypnotherapy
Also known as clinical hypnosis, this technique is utilized to facilitate a state of consciousness involving focused attention, reduced peripheral awareness, and enhanced responsiveness to suggestion. This state of consciousness helps us to tap into our natural abilities, use more of our potential, and make change more quickly. Hypnotherapy can be helpful for many conditions, including: anxiety and phobias, depression, trauma, sexual dysfunctions, habits, smoking cessation, pain, IBS, sleep disorders, performance enhancement, and concentration issues (ASCH, 2023). I am Certified in Clinical Hypnosis by the American Society for Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH).
LGBTQIA+ Affirmative Therapy
I am well-versed in the diverse identities within the LGBTQIA+ community and provide therapy that is affirming and attuned to the developmental and cultural experiences of people in the community. In therapy together, we can explore areas such as coming out, living as your most authentic self, relationships, sexual health, gender identity and expression, among others. Being aware of the strengths and resilience within the community, I also invite creativity, art, self-expression, and trying out what feels the most “you” in session.
Grief and Loss Therapy
Loss is a difficult experience that can happen in many ways - whether that be a death, loss of relationship, pet, or adjusting to a chronic or terminal health diagnosis — among many others. I am trained extensively in supporting clients through these adjustments, and making meaning out of experiences that, at times, shake up our entire understanding of life and the world. My study of constructivist psychology has led me to incorporate ritual and existential interventions in therapy as a powerful means of processing emotions following loss.
Consultation
I am an Approved Brainspotting Consultant and provide consultation towards becoming a Certified Brainspotting Practitioner. I am also an EMDR Consultant-in-Training (CIT) and can provide up to 15 hours individual consultation towards certification. In addition, I have been a consultant in several medical clinics and provide consultation to medical providers regarding the mind/body connection and supporting clients behaviorally with medical conditions. In addition, I provide consultation to companies looking to improve the well-being of employees or integrate mental health programs into their existing structures. I have presented internationally and domestically on human rights and mental health topics.
