Who I Am

“I have long had an interest in getting to know the world, its people, and learning about different cultures. I am committed to being a lifelong learner. As such, I treat my relationships with clients with a sense of openness, curiosity, dignity and respect. My approach is thoughtful, intuitive, gentle yet challenging, and with a respectful sense of humor.”

I’m Adam Johnson (he/him), PsyD, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with 10+ years experience currently based in New York City. I offer therapy to individuals in New York and Illinois, as well as professional consultation nationally and internationally.

My therapy approach is integrative. I draw from psychodynamic therapy and utilize Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), humanistic, and existential interventions. What does that all mean? These therapies can help to gain insights into your development and relational patterns, affirm your identity and find meaning in your lived experience, while also focusing on behavioral changes that help you live a life that is most in line with your values and authentic self.

While talk therapy is helpful, I also have expertise in several treatment approaches that do not involve purely talking, but rather a focus on the body or internal sensory experience. This is what is called "bottom up" processing. These include Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Hypnosis, and Brainspotting (BSP). I have found that these therapies can result in accelerated processing and healing, and often incorporate them in treatment as appropriate. For more information on these approaches, please look under "Services."

I am a bilingual therapist and offer services in English and Spanish. I have expertise working with individuals from different backgrounds from around the world, and welcome individuals from diverse linguistic, racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds. I have worked internationally and developed psychoeducational programs in Mexico, Costa Rica, South Africa, and the Dominican Republic.

I am the best fit for individuals who are motivated to engage deeply in the therapy process, curious and interested about their inner world, and willing to make changes in the service of having richer, fuller, more meaningful life.
