About me
Who I Am
I’m Dr. Adam Johnson (he/him), PsyD, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with over 10 years of experience. I provide therapy to individuals in New York and Illinois, and offer consultation nationally and internationally. My work is integrative and deeply personalized.
My passion for understanding people, cultures, and human experience led me to a career in psychotherapy. I bring this same openness and curiosity into our sessions—with deep respect, thoughtful challenge, and a sense of humor. As a lifelong learner, I view each therapeutic relationship as a unique collaboration grounded in dignity, empathy, and presence.
__________
How I Work
I use an integrative approach rooted in psychodynamic, humanistic, and evidence-based therapies like Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), attachment theory, and existential work. In practice, this means helping you understand how your past shapes your present, affirming your identity and values, and making meaningful changes aligned with your authentic self. Together, we balance reflection, insight, and action.
__________
Beyond Talk Therapy
While talk therapy is valuable, some experiences are held more deeply in the body and nervous system. I integrate body-based (‘bottom-up’) approaches like Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Brainspotting (BSP), Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP), and clinical hypnosis—modalities that support healing by working directly with the body and nervous system. These tools can help accelerate progress and are integrated into treatment when appropriate.
__________
A Culturally Attuned Approach
I offer therapy in both English and Spanish, and bring a multicultural lens to my work. I’ve been honored to work with individuals from across the globe and have developed psychoeducational programs in Mexico, Costa Rica, South Africa, and the Dominican Republic. I welcome clients of diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds, and strive to create a space where your full identity is affirmed.
__________
Is This the Right Fit?
I work best with individuals who are curious about their inner world, open to deep self-exploration, and motivated to create lasting, meaningful change. Together, we’ll work toward a life that feels more grounded, connected, and aligned with who you truly are.
